I rebuilt my gearbox a long time ago, but I only just "finished" the bike - a relative term.

Everything seems pretty good with the box, except that the lever doesn't always want to return reliably to the middle position when changing down gears. It is OK changing up though, and it generally feels to have the correct degree of springiness, when changing by hand.

Maybe it will all ease up over time.

Are there any known rebuild errors which might have caused this?

I had similar issues.It was necessary to re shape the pawl spring  to allow the pawl free movement with the minimum of clearance between spring arms and pawl. I also replaced the return spring that is prone to fracture at the bends ,It also can need shaping to a better fit.

I think I read your post, but I couldn't find it again.

I fixed the problem, but not in a way that is going to add much to Norton knowledge.

I took the gearbox outer cover off, and there was still a definite sticking point on the lever upswing. It disappeared when I loosened one on the stop plate fixing screws just a little.

There seemed to be a shiny high spot on the gearchange stop plate, so I filed that down slightly. Didn't seem to help much.

So I tried swapping in a spare ratchet assembly from a spare gearbox, and it worked fine. Then I put the original assembly into the spare gearbox outer, and that worked fine too!

So a mystery.
