Whats the best way of going about removing them from my Mk111 frame. Have tried tentatively to put a hacksawed slot in them with the intention of using a flat screwdriver to 'undo' them. I ran a file over one and got the impression they are either stainless or a hardened material. Was expecting aluminium.

First I tore the plate off by pushing a thin bladed screwdriver behind it, this leaves the rivets proud of the frame by the thickness of the plate then I gripped them with a pair of fresh unworn pliers and twisted them anti clockwise as they have a crude thread on the OD. Not sure how you would do it if you plan to keep the plate.

I've tried it with a slot, made with a Dremel and a cutting disc. Once I've been lucky an could turn it out with a screwdriver. Don't make a deep slot, only in the head not down to the shaft.
Good luck

They will push out from the inside by prying on them, no damage done. You gotta remove a lot of stuff though

As James said, the easiest way by far is to punch them out from the inside. No damage to the rivets, vin plate or frame. Ive just done mine during rebuild. It took less than 5 mins.

Many thanks to you all for the ideas. I shall try to push them out from the inside first. Unfortunately for me the frame has just been re sprayed for the rebuild and it was an oversight by me not to take it off prior to painting. Again thanks

They're hard. They have a hard quick helix spiral that broaches it's own "thread" when hammered in so as to make it difficult for them to pull straight out. I would guess the helix is too quick to unscew evenif you could make a slot in the head.
If you want to save the vin tag; grind off the heads carefully with a little tool like a dremel, remove the tag and punch the remaining rivet stub all the way through into the headstock.
If the vin tag is already scrap; chisel the heads off and punch the remaining rivetstub all the way through into the headstock.
Martyn thanks, Mike
