Slimline model air filter ????

In the parts listing for 1961/62 Models ES2, 50, 88, 99, 650, $ DeLuxe there is an air filter shown for "All Singles" Part number 18684

Has anyone ever seen one? I am guessing that they were popular in the mid-east because of the blowing sand, etc.

I cannot picture in my mind what it would look like and how it was fitted. There is a hole in the sheetmetal between the battery box and the oil tank but I am thinking that it could only be used on a twin. On then singles the carb is mounted splayed and the hole will not line up.

Photos or drawings would be appreciated.

Hello Mike,

I have a proto type made by Amal, it is the pancake type but I think less than one inch across. I obtained it many years ago from Martin Bratby.

I can tell you that it will fit, just, on the singles so it will easily fit on a twin, though I never got around to trying it on a twin..

Last year, I was going to have it made in stainless but couldn't find it and not had time to search since. When I do find the filter I'll post a picture with measurements on here. But the short answer is that such a filter does exist.

Hi Mike

I would also be interested in seeing a picture of the air filter to fit to my 1960 slimline model 50......I was even thinking of re-welding the inlet stub to make it line up with the hole between the oil tank and battery cover to enable a filter to be fitted, but possibly this is a bit drastic! any sugestions would assist. I already have a short belmouth with mesh fitted.

When I still had my slimline ES2 I welded up a removable extension to the intake that allowed the std carb to sit at 90deg to the motor. I got some s/steel flanges laser cut and used dairy quality piping (1.6mm wall thickness) in s/s to get the required bend. This allowed me to use a pancake airfilter. One could have used a cone K&N also. No ill effects on the fuelling here in the warm colonies.
