I've fitted a new main bearing to a mid fifties laydown box. It was double sealed so I removed the inner to allow lubrication. For that same reason I did not - originally - replace the steel shim/oil seal in the inner side of the bearing.
So two questions:
Should I fit a shim to take the place of the seal?
Is there any harm in simply refitting the steel seal?
Any views?

You have done the right th…
You have done the right thing by removing the inner bearing seal. Now refit the original steel sealing shims, one either side of the bearing.

Thanks guys. It's a rubber sealed bearing. There was only ever a steel sealing shim on the inner side of the bearing.

The '56 parts book lists…
The '56 parts book lists two "Main gear wheel oil retaining washers". A2/317 sits between main gear wheel and bearing (item 16 on the exploded diagram), A2/320 sits between gearbox shell and bearing (I can't see this one on the diagram).

That's right Ian but there wasn't one there and I note that in MIck Hemmings' DVD on gearbox rebuilds he says that there is a space for a seal between bearing and shell but he's never seen one fitted and wonders if they were dropped.

I have an idea that the shim helps to ensure the correct end float on the main gear wheel but could well be wrong on that.
Is it a rubber sealed bearing or steel ("shielded")?
