Richard. This is a huge subject, which has been covered pretty exhaustively on these pages before. Can I suggest you use the search box to look up previous posts, rather than attempt to go through it all again?

I am using a floating one so that the oil is always at the correct level.

you are lucky chaps, I doesn't have a dipstick, well not on the bike anyway, what I do have is a strip of opaque plastic pipe to the frontal rear of the tank which would appear to be as much good as a one legged man at an ass kicking contest!. kind regards

I guess you have a fastback tank with the sightglass to check the level, as you say as much use as a chocolate fireguard. I soft soldered mine shut years ago. If you could find a good way to seal a glass tube in place that was tough enough to withstand the rigours of the situation then the sightglass would work I suppose.

Off-topic, but your pic brought on an amazing twinge of nostalgia for the Big 4 I had back in the early 70s

Chocolate fireguards are fine. You just have to eat them quickly. Even chocolate spanners have their uses.
