No oil drain holes in 38 ES2 head and cylinder

Forums

G'day All, Unfortunately for me I have my bike in pieces again. Am I correct in assuming that the oil drain holes in the head next to the valve stems and in the cylinder were not introduced until 48 when direct oil feed lines were introduced ? Mine doesn't have any.

You can see the marks on the cylinder where the gasket hole is provided for cylinders with the holes. So where exactly is the oil that collects up top supposed to go ? It must just work it's way down the valve guides otherwise both the wells and spacers would be full of oil.

Hello Glenn,

You are correct in saying that therewere no drain holes in the OHV valve wells from 1938 to 1948, an extract from the book 'Norton Singles' byRoy Bacon and with regard to the 1938 OHV engines reads;

"There were no drains to the valve wells in the head, which were just scraped out when decoking"

Hope this answers your question.

Regards,Karl.

Thanks for that Karl. Glenn
