New Member Dominator problem

Hi Ive just joined the group and have found it very interesting. Only I have a problem with my 99 dominator. Maybe this problem has probably been discussed in the past but Im not sure how to locate it. My dominator 99 is 600 twin with a single carb and Lucas 18D2 distributer. With no choke on and the engine hotit ticksover ok but when I turn the throttlethe engine revs and the revs do not drop, after I release the throttle or they drop very slowly after maybe 1 minute.

I have checked the cables are not sticking.

I have a Colourtune fittted with the engine hot at tick over I can adjust the mixture yellow to slightly blue.

Stripped and cleaned blown out the Amal monobloc 376 carb

Changed plugs NGK BP6ES then BP7ESnow BP5ES.

Jet sizes are correct with the manual and blown out with air. needle 106 at position 3 . The pilot jet 25 main jet 250.

Checked for air leaks with the engine running sprayed WD40 over the carb and head inlet joints no rise in revs.

Could the pilot jet be the problem as its very loose in the threats and when I fit the cap it can turn before the cap locks?

The throttle retuns to the stop with a click so I know is seated.

but the only way to reduce the revs sometimes is with the thottle stop screw when the revs fall wind it in again to get the correct tick over.

Any help will be much appreciated I Live in Lincoln if anyone can help.

Ive been on this problem days.

Thanks

Jono

The pilot jet should be tightened from below with a small screwdriver before fitting the cap nut.You may have the ignition too far advanced or the advance/retard unit under the points may be sticking ,Lean the machine over to the gearbox side and put a drop or two of oil in the end of the distributor shaft(under the rotor arm.) .Check the carb top is fully down and the ring is not cross threaded .

Thank Robert for your help.

In my manual its says the pilot screw should be 1.5 turns out from fully closed but I will try it screwed fully in. The pilot jet was not fully screwed in for sure.

The carb top is down for sure and seated I sprayed that with WD40 running.

I will oil the distributer, points are new and checked.

I will also check the timing tomorrow.

Thanks very much.

Don't confuse the idle mixture screw(1-1/2 turns out) and the pilot jet itself (under the cap. You can't see it. Should be snug).

Thanks Jonathon, no not confused at all (about most things but not this) In the manual they call the mixture screw the air screw on the Amal Monobloc, but definitely says pilot jet screw in the region of 1.5 turns out (Page 81 last paragraph Haynes manual).

Looks like thismaybe my problem.

Much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Jono, It does sound (from your comment) that you may still be a little confused. However if not I would also consider that you may also have an issue with the ignition which is intermitent and can give tickover problems, bad plug cap, dirty points, dirty plugs etc.Half a turn on the idle mixture screw can give you dirty plugs ,

Hi Robert just to end the thread everyone was a great help.

I took the cap off the pilot jet tightened the jet screw replaced the cap started the bike adjusted the air screw to give the correct colour onthe colourtune.

Took the bike out pulls like a train full throttle revs drop correctly 70mph all great. Got home removed the plugs perfect slightly discoloured.

My issue was the pilot jet screw and the way its explained in the Haynes manual. (maybe I misunderstood but I build Rolls Royce and Ruston Gas Turbines and Power Turbines for oil Companies all over the world, manuals are normally not a problem).

Thanks to everyone for thereinput, 1st Norton and 1st fault will not bemy last.

Thank You so much.

Hi Jono,

This should have been posted on the "Heavy Twins" section as that's what a Dominator is. You mightfind other postings there which might interest you.

Good luck.
