My Mk.lll, sprags and starters - the tale so far

Forums

When I bought my MK3 in the middle of january this year i got it full in the knowledge that the electric starter was removed and it was in the box of bits along with the overload device etc. I also bought it knowing that one of the engine mounting cradle 'ears' (driveside bottom) on the g/box cradle was broken/missing.Imanaged to effect a temporary repair at the vendors garage (I using hate the word 'bodge' to describe this, as a bodger was a person that made chairlegs!) Yesterday was the day I took the primary drive cover off to see what other bits i will need to ressurect the electric start, correct the horrors found and to do a proper repair to the g/box cradle. I will soon be in the process of modifiying the engine sprocket and starter gear to close up the clearances on the sprag, Ala the ken Merrick mod but instead of bonding the ring to the drive gear i will be grinding the ring to be a press fit on the drive gear. Having my own machineshop to do this my question is:- does anyone have any worn out drive gears and engine sprockets that I could buy to practise on? With the rate at which members have said that their sprag has knackered the country must be swimming with them! Moving on to the starter motor, I have a belt drive kit that came with the bike that the clutch drum has half worn teeth. Does anyone have a knackered starter motor they want to swap? I want to build a starter with rolling element bearings like they fit to harleys. My bike was owned by a previous NOC member and I have just read his posts from a few years ago and now I,m having to correct all the problems that were never resolved properly.

Peter,

I have or had a stack of knackered engine sprockets/sprags/starters in my junk store . I will have a look tomorrow (Sunday) to see if I still have them, just can't remember if I threw them out (age is a lousy mistress)

Will get back to you then, if I have them you are welcome .

PS. You will love your bike soon !

Hi Peter,

Had a look and found 1 x engine sprocket with knackered sprag installed, ! x crank gear ( you know the one the size of a water wheel !) .

If you email me your address on trident.sams@gmail.com I will sort out sending the bits to you, unless you are close to Merseyside and want to fetch them.
