Model 50 crankcase repair

Forums

I have just had a crack welded on my '37 crankcase but unfortunately, the welder has used a linisher I think and removed original metal from the mating face of the crankcase half, leaving a 15 thou gap when halves mated together. Does anyone have any experience of a 'liquid metal' product to build up the face. I am reluctant to go back to the welder and also there is a very slight distortion as a result of the heat/welding process.

Have a look at JB Weld

http://bit.ly/XVbwNl

We have been using it on my ES2 rebuild where the previous owner had been careless with mating surfaces in places when levering off parts.

We have also used it to repair the cracked rocker inspection cover (I can't seem to find a replacement anywhere)

Once fully cured, it is as hard as nails - you can file it and tap it just like the parent metal it's bonded to. Highly recommended.

...about four quid on eBay, so not extortionate by any means!

I can also vouch for JB weld. Some years ago I used it to repair the cylinder head - barrel join on a small marine diesel whilst stuck in France. This was a burn mark 1mm deep running between an exhaust valve seat & a water channel. The JB weld withstood combustion temperature & pressure during the return Channel crossing and a few months subsequent use. In fact I'm sure it would have lasted the remaining life of the engine. I only replaced the head / barrel because they came up cheap on ebay and I'm 1 of those compulsive 'fixers of things that aren't yet broken'.

many thanks Andrew and Grant, JB Weld it will be............I have an overnight (starting midnight on 5th April) road trial to rebuild for, better get going. I gave away a couple of short pushrod tube ES2 engines a few years ago, I wonder which year your rocker inspection cover is for Grant....maybe my mate still has some bits. Let me know.

Hi Dave, thanks for the offer to take a look... it's all ears to the ground for these. I have seen a couple at autojumbles, but both broken (cracked) due to over tightening.

Seems like a common problem, in what is a very poor quality casting.

It is a 61 bike, so the late engine with the large rocker inspection hole.

Thanks again, and fingers crossed!

linisher??? Is this some kind of tool that looses in translation from English English to American English?

Also, the repair was so bad that should we have the name of the company that did them so they can be avoided? Or should we leave the decision up to Dave?

Well you need to go back to the welder and make your complaint to him , And he should sort this out for you with no extra charge , If he is unwilling to do this a go and see the trading standards about them ,they should take this up as its bad workmanship !
