Metzler RoadTec 01 any good for grip?

Forums
Looking to replace old Avon Roadriders 90/90V19 and 100/90V19  on an 850 MKIII Metzler RoadTec 01 do they same sizing. I'm more interested in grip than tyre life, do they stick better than the Avons? Cheers, Richard

It is the road surface that will cause anyone to lose grip. Unless you are racing on a perfect track surface the choice of NEW tyre is largely irrelevant. But people love to say how their tyre is better than another. Old tyres are another matter. Everyone loves the Avon Roadriders, but I cooked a rear tyre riding two-up on my Commando and lost the rear, which was due for replacement and had gone hard and saw-tooth, on a nasty polished stone wet bend. The chap in front, on an A65 two-up but with brand new Avon ribbed front and SM rear passed over the same surface without problem. RoadTec 01 will work just fine. I think Ashley likes them. You are riding solo but I have to plan for two plus luggage.  I now have Metzler Lasertecs on my Commando which have a higher load rating than Avon Roadriders.

Brilliant. Grip well, wear well, steer well. Good wet or dry. Bit more expensive but I've found the extra life, over, say, Conti Go, makes the Metzeler better value.

I've got 100/90x18 front and 120/90x18 rear on mine.

Yes, maybe all tyres are good these days but confidence is all and I'll put mine in the Roadtec - which is why they're on all my bikes, including the ones that take radials. (No, I don't work for them.)

Hi Richard, Like Stan, I have these tyres,  in my case its on my Dommi. (100/90×18, 110/90×18) and I agree with Stan. Really good tyres for all conditions. You might find footrests,  stand lugs etc getting worn away though as they are so confidence inspiring. For your Commando,  depends on your rim sizes as to whether you can get them in the size that you need or not, but as tyres go they are great. regards, George

Sounds wonderfull ,but real world experience tells me that its pretty  unlikely that they make a tyre that will fit MY bike. And no supplier I have ever dealt with has any idea.  Do Metzeler list the sizes that are made and availiable  so I can order what i need instead of what they think i need ? .(which definately has never worked !)

I liked the Conti Classic attack, but for lifespan they wore quickly, again they are no longer available in the 19'' size I used. Trying to find 19'' rear either dedicated or universal is hard these days. Some of the new tyres are endless belt technology in the way they are made which should make them universal, but it seems the manufacturers will not commit to saying so.  The AM9 Roadrunner is still available, you may wonder why but it it is still used by the tourers who get more miles out of it than than the Roadriders.

Thats usefull Stan, they do make an old style block tread 19" tyre suitable for old clunkers and its also a lot cheaper than the Avon SM , Probably just as well they dont make a classic attack for my bike , Dont want to leave my old  buddies too far  behind. After all they used to race !!.

Hi Stan, I reread and see there is no 19 rear. I guess front is driven and rear drives and this alters the construction. I wonder if metzler will be able to shed any light on downsides re wear or performance, I'll check. Cheers, R.

I would expect Metzeler to simply say don't do it. Roadtec 01s have different compounds, different construction front and rear.

That's one of the reasons Roadtecs are good. You get decent temperature in the front but the rear doesn't overhead and destroy itself - or the reverse. Which is the issue with universal front/rear tyres.

After long asking around I bought again a pile of 19" 100/90 roadriders for my combatted Mk2, I consume 2 pairs of them per year, nervous how long Avon will make them. Changing to 18" not really an option because I can`have the bike lower. Would love to find a 19" 120/90 or at least 110/90 ... any hints and links very appreciated.

Pretty much any road tyre is as good as any other these days. I have found that the good old Avon SM/Speedmaster combination is perfectly good within the limits of lean on any road bike, wet or dry.  My 500 BSA is currently on Cheng Shin trials tyres and it is still possible to leave sparks from the footrests when cornering enthusiastically. The handling is a bit odd though!
