Laydown gearbox 53 Model 7

Forums

Canada calling. I have finished restoring a '53 Model 7 and an odd oil leak has cropped up. Oil is leaking through the steel kick start sleeve and the inner cover of the gearbox. I have checked thoroughly and it is no leaking through the kick start and the steel sleeve itself. I have check the Andover Norton laydown gearbox drawing and there is an item #79 shown but not listed as Andover do not make this item. Firstly has anyone out there experienced this leakage, and second is item 79 a seal, shim etc. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Barry, many thanks for your input. I see re-reading my post I have to improve my proof reading! However, I agree it could be a cork gasket. My next question would be has anyone out there ever pressed out the steel sleeve. My guess is the inner cover must be stepped to for the sleeve and gasket to make a good seal. Before approaching the heat gun and press has anyone out there taken these two apart. Tony

hello

when i heated the case to replace the bearing. on tapping the case onto some wood to shock the bearing out the kickstart sleeve moved its position as well. so dont think it would need much heat to get it to move. see what others say.

Hi Barry and Paul, thanks again for your input, extremely helpful. I checked the NOC parts list and there does not appear to be a cork seal in the listing. However, I am sure this can be overcome.

As a follow up to yesterday's message, sleeve pushed out of cover, no cork or otherwise in place, much evidence of oil travelling down the shaft. Seal now in place, plus the kickstart shaft has been modded for a seal as well. thanks again to both Barry and Paul for their help.
