HID headlight

Forums

Hi all,

Chatting to a few members from the Yorkshire Branch at Bremen (excellent event) â they had converted their Commandoâs head light to HID. They said they had to do some re-wiring to allow it to work.

Iâve bought one off eBay but not sure what this re-wiring would be â can anyone help with that question please?

It has three input wires Green (-), White (Hi) and Blue (Lo).

Thanks â Paul.

Have you bought a proper HID headlight with a shunt type device that gets hot in use? These headlights use about 23,000volts but comsume only 35watts. I have one on my Rotary. The connections on mine are, a female headlight socket to go on the back of your new bulb, a male headlight type connector to go into your original bulb socket. In addition to that there is a red wire +ve and black wire -ve that I have taken direct from the battery. My rotary is -ve earth. The bulb has only one element and achieves dip/main by electromagnetically moving the bulb fore and aft within the reflector. You have to find somwhere to mount the shunt, close to the headlight and another small box.

The beam has a dark spot in the middle but is very bright blue/white. because the bulb is not specifically designed for the reflector, Cibie z beam in my case, the beam may be a bit anti-social but it's the brightest thing I've ridden behind. The bonus for a Commando or other old brit bike owner is the 35watts consumption but the shunt does need to be tucked away (in the airflow) if you are worried about the esthetics. I paid about £56 on ebay for mine from China. Don't poke your fingers into the workings as there is a lot of ergs knocking around in theresmiley
