Stamped on the left hand side of the cross bar, under the petrol tank, near the headstock of a 1952 ES2 there are five numbers. What do these numbers represent as the matching frame and engine number is in the correct location according to the information on the Norton website.

It should be the shop frame number - an identifier for the frame during assembly.
Bearing in mind Norton's antiquated systems and their allocation of a single sequence of frame and engine numbers for all models, it cannot be other than that the 'matching' engine and frame numbers were simply stamped on both after assembly.
In the meantime, both frame and engine had a 'shop' number for traceability and identification in the works...In some ways, these are the true engine and frame numbers and they never match...the others are just decoration.
