Cylinder base gasket

Should I order one and wait for the post - or is it safe to cut one from cardboard or paper and maybe use a thin coat of (maybe) blue hylomar? Or grease? I don't want it all glued solid. It's a lot of work to replace if it all goes wrong- but I'd like to get the bike going. It looks like a wet weekend ahead

Ideally you should use gasket paper but it's not essential. Just make sure the paper you use is neither too thick or too thin. I have just been working on a Rudge which has been lying since 1960 or thereabouts. The gaskets still had the maker's name visible on them - Kellogs. I happily re-used them. I would suggest Hylomar on one side of the gasket, grease on the other.Avoids the sticking together syndrome.
