Commando ignition timing

Forums

Hi all - just passing on a bit of info - - I previously asked about the accuracy of the inbuilt timing scale inside the primary chaincase on Commandos. My 920 has been laid-up for 5 months and I decided as part of 'fettling' it for this year I'd try and accurately check the ignition timing using a dial-guage etc. After setting it to TDC and then accurately moving the crankshaft to 28 BTDC I retimed the Tri-Spark ignition based on this setting. Result - the bike started first kick and subsequently first kick every time whether hot or cold (it's previously always been an unpredictable starter). I subsequently rechacked the timing based on the inbuilt scale and found it was 4 degrees "off". I realise that I've had the timing wrong ever since I've owned the bike (22 years) - it now runs better than ever - - .

Cheers,

Good point, worth checking! Very useful for me, since I am in the process of bying and installing the Pazon electronic ignition.
