Commando identification

Forums

Hello I'm new member from Canada.

Picked up a 750 Commando at a good price very complete for full bottoms up restoration.

As I'm checking serial numbers there appear to be some peculiarities.

Frame and transmission are matched with #220833 which from various reference tables is beyond last manufacture serial number for 1973.

Engine appears to have original unaltered #235377 has 32mm carbs and a C on top of the head in front of the central head steady bolt. Can't find an RF# anywhere on the head.

Now I'm wondering could it be very late stage 750 Commando using up spare components before switch to 850 production or possibly even a high performance 750/Combat.

Your thoughts and insight would be very much appreciated.

Regards

Peter

Probably a Combat engine - the C and the 32mm carbs suggest that and it fits with the engine age. Is the breather an aluminium body located at the back of the crankcases? You'd have to check the camshaft and the pushrod lengths to find out for sure. If it is an unmodified Combat engine then you'd be wise to strip it completely and replace the main bearings as well as undertaking all the mods recommended by the experts in order to stop it blowing up on you later.

235xxx series crankcase s can be 750 or 850 but seem to be originally for the short stroke 750, no doubt used as replacement for the Combat doing a good grenade job on the original set of cases. Look at the dump and I think you will find a large dump plug which was not on the original 72/73 cases.
