Cleaning stainless

What is the best method for cleaning Stainless Exhausts, obviously not the reddish/blue but other discolourisation - also not mud?

I have I just got poor metal?

Thanks Roger

The gold tinge that occurs on SS exhaust systems is surface oxidation, much of this can be removed with a rag dipped in Solvol Autosol applied and rubbed hard with a finger.... Depending on how hot the exhaust becomes it lasts for a week or two. Even the darker colours nearer the head can be reduced. Don't worry about wearing the metal away.

As a side point, I wonder why SS wheel rims always seem to have a gold tinge? SS knives and forks manage to look bright silver with the same hue as chrome plating. I can always spot SS rims from a distance and it never looks right and spoils the looks of many renovated bikes....IMHO....Les

Normal alloy wheel cleaner which is used for cars will remove the orange tinge in an instant. With my SS exhaust pipe bikes, I clean and polish the pipes and silencers once a year, looks good for a couple of weeks.

I find dura glit and stainless cleaner intended for cookers and hobs to be good for stubborn stains but generally just use solvol or auto body polish.

'...Phosphoric acid as the active ingredient....'

In that case you could just use Coca-Cola, I keep a bottle in the garage for recalcitrant/rusted nuts etc.

Just don't drink the stuff!
