Basic paint question

Forums

I need to do a minor touch up to an otherwise immaculate frame & re-paint the whole of a prop stand, both in black

A few years back I would have gone in to halfords (or similar) and bought primer & black cellulose sprays and brush-on cellulose primer & black

Are the acylics aerosols I see now suitable for a prop stand (if primed) ?

The main or possibly only type of brush-on I could find was hammerite which last time I used on a frame (25 years ago) turned out to completely wash off in contact by petrol - is this still the case?

If it makes a difference I think the frame is a factory finish and not stoved

Searched for a thread on this, know it's basic stuff, just want to save making a mess!!

Thanks in advance

If the paint you used 25 years ago washed off in the petrol of that era, then the current fuel will have it off in seconds. I would try one of the high temperature gloss black cylinder paints such as PJ1. Use the Search facility on this web site to see more on PJ1. I have found that you have to cure this sort of paint in an oven before it will go really hard. I cannot promise it will be totally resistant to modern petrol but it should be better than most.

Halfords also do petrol resistant lacquer, I have not tried it but have recently used their primers and gloss black aerosols to cover a dent that was removed from the tank. The seem to cover well, but have only finished the job this week so I'm just waiting for the paint to harden.

The petrol resistance is not a major issue - I was just amazed at how quickly petrol stripped hammerite back then

Sounds like acrylic paint will be ok for the stand and I've got an old tin of cellulose black for the frame, just need primer
