Another Inter Frame No. quandary

Forums

An International frame shows up for sale and it just happens to have the same number as my orphan engine stamped on it in addition to the proper place where another number is stamped, both 1948 appropriate. Any theories other than someone attempting to legitimize an engine transplant?

Unusual in these days of rampant overstamping I admit, but this looks OK to me. The Norton with Frame No. C11 14812 was of course an Inter with the 11 code shown. The very close number 14958 is the Shop Frame No. for that machine and just happens to be the same set of digits as the Frame No. for another Inter which was manufactured shortly afterwards.

The Shop Frame Nos. around this time were usually similar to the Frame No. but never identical, except by extreme coincidence. It could happen however; I ran a quick search and fairly quickly found a 1947 Manx where this was the case. Before anyone asks, it does not seem that this was a particular feature of the Manx as all the adjacent machines of that type had differing numbers.

As a postscript, any Member thinking of buying a Norton should take advantage of the facilities made available via our Records Officers. They can usually advise as to whether or not machine numbers are what they should be and help you to avoid a very expensive mistake. Purchasers are right to query the credentials of almost any camshaft Nortons or parts as so many sellers are passing off other Norton parts in order to make more money on them.

Michael did the right thing here in asking about these numbers. At first I thought from the time/date stamp on his posting that the issue was keeping him awake at nights but it turns out he lives abroad. Incidentally, the Inter frame that started off this discourse was on an export bike that was shipped to the same country and presumably has remained there since.

For anyone in the community that might be interested, the frame is for sale on US ebay from Oregon. It won't show in a UK ebay search.

He says he won't ship but then again maybe. So you'll have to contact him before any bidding. I have no interest whatsoever in this other than having bought another frame from him to use in my own project that previously was using an ES2 frame. My new frame was cracked as well but has been repaired and is fit to go!
