Dare I hope?

Forums

OK, have fitted the rejuvenated pawls with hardened and ground dowel pins, new ratchet, sprocket and wavy washer (quite cheap from NOC shop) and screwed it all back together.

Hurrah! The starter whizzes the engine over briskly with no nasty noises. After testing a few times with ignition off to check the mechanics, switched the ignition on and was rewarded with the engine bursting (well limping) into life. Maybe I can get out on the road before summer ends?

"Hope" is what has got you to this stage of your ownership of a classic bike, without it most of us would have given up very early in our tinkerings.
Go and polish your visor and enjoy the experience of riding while the sun is blessing us with its aura.

... although I have 60 years' experience of living with what are now called classics but were once just cheap old bikes. This one has tested my patience however....

Bravo Ian!
And thank you for keeping us up-to-date on your Promethean like struggles.

... to please. Mind you I'm a terrible shot.

Well done for persevering and succeeding Ian, that's great news!   Correcting all the previous owners well intentioned but awful bodging and neglect of 60 odd years is always a frustrating battle but worth it in the long run.  Once sorted a healthy, well maintained Electra is a reliable, well handling, stopping and surprisingly nippy joy to own and ride, well deserving of the Norton name!   Enjoy plenty of safe and enjoyable riding this summer and thanks for keeping us informed of your progress!
