Amal Stayup floats

Hi all, I'm considering fitting stay up floats and alloy viton tipped float needles to my Commando twin Mk.1 Concentrics. Any advice please? I seem o recall that a few years ago a friend tried the floats on his Concentric Mk1s and they continually flooded as the top of the float fouled the underside of the float chamber top before the needle stopped the fuel flow.

Are they worth the effort?

I recently had a problem with a monoblock where the plastic float was catching on one of the ally chamber ribs and causing flooding. A file soon solved this.

The only way I could get the stay up floats to work was by using the Brass viton tipped needles. The alloy viton tipped needles would not seal unless the float was set too low, they would then flooded when the Commando engine was running.

They seem to be ok with new brass viton tipped needles, an old pair of brass viton tipped needles did stick.

How much do any of us spend on things we actually need? The whole ethos of marketing is to convince us to buy things we don't need - leaky old motorcycles surely being one of the least necessary purchases...

I have a spare plastic float. I think I'll leave it in a jamjar with a drop of vodka. Does the team think that would be good test to find out if ethanol attacks nylon? One source lists ethanol effect as "temporary loss of stiffness - good chemical resistance" Are Burlen selling us something we don't need?

It is generally held that ethanol does indeed cause a 'temporary loss of stiffness'.

Stay away from the brass viton tipped float needles, these have now been replaced by lighter weight alloy ones, as there were several reported issues of the heavier brass ones snapping shut.

read the very bottom part of this Amal bulletin.

Hello Mark Ive fitted them to all my bikes, trials bikes as I had a problem when one of my trials bikes was constantly flooding when stripped found petrol inside the float itself. The stay up float can make it more easier to set the float level as well as the stainless tags can easily be set to correct petrol level. they are worth it in my opinion.

good luck

Paul.
