63 m50 rear chain

Forums

I am being lazy with this question as I do not want to remove my chain yet due to a bad back!!

Can anyone advise how many links the chain has? I think it is 97 but am unsure if this is with or without the connecting link.

Thanks.

I would not rely on what the book says as its possible that previous owners may have fitted different sprockets also a link may have been removed to take up slack. Get a longer chain and sort it out yourself.

Dear Mr Evans,

Take a length of red, white or blue cotton about 8" long and tie it to a roller on the bottom run of the chain and call it Number 1. Rotate the rear wheel in any direction and count the number of rollers passing from N01 until N01 comes round again. Do not count N01 again. That is the number of rollers. It is very simple and fool-proof as I know having recently ordered three new chains for my bikes from Sprockets Unlimited. They confirmed that I had exactly the right number of rollers in each case. My '53 Inter had 97 rollers, '60 ES2 had 98 rollers and '65 650SS had 97 rollers. Don't forget to include the right width - 1/4" or 3/8" depending upon your model/machine and whether it has been modified with wider sprockets. Generally this was undertaken by owners of twins to cater for higher power outputs.

Sprockets Unlimited were very knowledgeable and helpful.

Peter Bolton
