Correct Transfers for a 1972 Roadster

Forums

Hi All,

I have had a 1972 750cc Roadster for a couple of years now and have decided to give a tidy up trying not to get caught up into doing a complete restoration.

Could someone let me know what are the correct transfers for the tank and side panels, the bike is black.

Every picture I look at for this year seems to have different transfers?

Do the side panels have "Commando 750" underlined or not, does the tank have the pinstripe line on the back of the tank going down and around?.

Are the gold transfers meant to have a black border?

It would be great to know which transfer to purchase.

Thanks in advance for any help

Regards

Here are photos - I will likely have to do these in three posts .

1972 manufacture Combat Roadster - UK model

Tank lining is paint - gold color - 3/16" line width - reserve marking

wet transfer . All others vinyl sticker type . Although difficult to see, the Norton script has black outline on gold lettering.

Even easier to put in the post! .... just click on the picture/icon  of a mountain, select the file/image,  name it and click save. Continue writing then click save again when you have finished, don’t worry if the image looks too big, it sorts itself out when click the final save.Job done!

Thanks Dan - I'll give that a try . I can build wheels & balance crankshafts but computer stuff - still learning.

Hi Richard,

Thanks very much for taking the time to take and post your photos, I now know what to look for.

I did not think that the Commando used that type of panel stripe, but to be honest I have mostly earlier Norton's so my knowledge is not great.

Thanks again.

Cheers

From the 750s, only the black and gold Roadster had any tank lining. The other colours didn't. The 'D' form was very different from the double lining that 850 Roadsters had (on all colours). Interstates were all lined (single on 750s and double on the 850s).

Hi Richard,

That explains a few things, nothing worse than looking at photos on the internet as you never know if the restorations have been completed correctly or I guess some people just do what  they like which is fair enough.

Great to have this forum to sort things out if required.

Thanks again

Cheers

Interesting that you show a steel tank and side cover for an original 72?

Here in north america we only got fiberglass in 72. In 73 started steel components.

Placement of the 750 commando would have been lower and parallel with the top of the Z plate and the ground and not pointing "up hill"/parallel with the top of the side cover.

Hi David -

As a younger man I owned a 72 Combat Roadster US model with orange metal flake ( ugh ! ) fiberglass tank / panels. This one came my way from the widow of the original owner who bought it new in the UK and toured the British Isles with it before bringing it home with him to the USA - hence the steel tank / panels etc.
