Head gasket

Forums

Compression was down on my Atlas, so I pulled the head, and found a poorly seated head gasket (the composite one). I have good used copper gasket. Is it okay to put on a used one (after annealing)?

As long as the mating faces are flat with no damage, I can't see why not!

I have always re-use my solid copper gaskets quite e few times after annealing, on a single and twin with no problem.

To ensure there is no weep, I put asmall beadof Loctite 510 flange sealant on both sides around the inner edge and any oil holes. Ensure that all surfaces are thouroughly de-greased with metho or similar non petroleum base cleaner.

Works for me.

Three years ago,I put new solid copper head gaskets on both my Commando and Dommie 99 . The Commando gave no problems but the Dommie gasket leaked oil out of one side. The cylinder head and barrel were both changed on the Dommie but the gasket was annealed and reused. It leaked in exactly the same place. Not sure why.

I know that you have to be very careful when annealing these gaskets, otherwise any thin sections, such as near headbolt holes, can go even thinner.
