i have just had a look at six norton twin wheels and though some have been rebuilt two look original ie rusty and withold spokes [front butted] hardly any match! is there a factory way of spoking? should the inner spokes face forward and outer rearward on the rear wheel and opposite on the front? on some wheels there is one outer and one inner facing forward and one outer one inner facing rearward other wheels are paired inner to the front outer to the rear, perhaps it does not matter regarding structure for the braking and acceleration forces and each wheelbuilder does his own thing, i seemed to remember truimph years ago had a stuctural lacing pattern but perhaps their rims were not as good as nortons.

The Norton factory used a particular spoking pattern for all the full width hub heavy bikes up to the Commando era. Then the pattern changed, apparently when nearly all production was Wolverhampton based. The basic pattern was the same into the hub but the order of pairs of spokes, entering the rimgoing anticlockwise, got reversed.
The attachment diagram, shows the earlier spoking pattern. The most important point being that if you take any 4 spokes on one flange......the 1st and 4th spokes must always be at roughly 180* to each other. ie in a nearly straight line. On later wheels, this angle decreased to about 170*
The attached wheel photo shows a good re- spoking that follows the correct pattern..

thank you for the replies and pictures ,it clarifies it a bit better, i can replicate the pattern as i am using the original dunlop rims just replacing the spokes the hubs were laced different front to back and as i said the others i checked all had differences, thanks again.

When i rebuilt my 99 wheels i did the rear first using a rim supplied by Central. I found i could not replicate the spoke pattern of the Bracebridge St wheel. For the front wheel i bought a rim from a local old wheel builder and the pattern was as the orriginal. I can only assume that later AMC built bikes used a different pattern.
