Early Commando questions

Forums

Just picked up an early Commando from May of '68, and a couple of questions I hope someone can answer:

- my transmission has no number stamped on it anywhere. Is this common?

- the bike has the letter 'S' stamped in a variety of places - the head, the crankcase, the transmission, and on the instrument brackets, that I've seen so far. Look ilke factory stamps, don't know why anyone would do this post-works. Anyone seen this before, or know what it means?

Most Commandos have the eng number stamped on the gearbox, not sure about the really early ones. The S is likely to be a previous owners stamp so that if nicked all the parts could be identified, most stolen bikes in the UK ended up in pieces.
