N15CS Atlas 1964 strip

Forums

Hello again. I have begun to strip this Atlas motor. Odd things have been found. Has high pressure feed to rockers from below PRV. Has six start pump drive. Has scrolled rockers spindles (facing out). Has pushrods which look madeentirely from alloy but must have hard inserted ends, & are parallel top to bottom. Polished rockers with shims. Bottom filterplug full of debris.

I expected to see 3 start pump drive, low pressure return feed rockers & scrolled spindles facing inwards. Not all bad though I presume?

Am stalled for want of a slave timing cover to dismantle further. Anyone near Marlow in Bucks got one to lend for five minutes?

There have probably been a few changes in your bikes 50 years of service. Owners to start with. Looking at the collection of special parts one of the previous owners (I am assuming here) has obviously tuned the engine a bit.

Changing the oil pump worm to a 6 start was one of the first recommended mods and easy to accomplish. Polished rockers is a bit harder. The pressure feed to scrolled rockers is ok if you fancy an oil cooled, smoky engine.

1966 was the year that plain rocker spindles, pressure fed rockers and 6 start oil pump gears really started arriving.

Your bike, if late 1964, might just be correct if wearing 7 3/8" fork yokes and a twin clock plate. Talk to Tony Curzon. He has the all the knowledge regarding these models.

Cheers Phil. None of them pushrods look like mine. Mine are perfectly parallel top to bottom. I may have to post a photo.

I figure plain rocker spindles will have to fitted, flats outward.

June 1964, twin clock plate, cannot tell yoke size (beginner).

The finish on the spigoted barrel face is the worst I've ever seen on any bike. Sealed Ok though, copper head gasket.

Engine has turned out a nightmare. Water contamination has pitted the lower bores, bottom spigots rusty, whole crank surface very rusty, one cam lobe extremely badly pitted, bottom filter full of rust flakes. All valve gear worn out too.

Those pushrods ARE all alloy & the ends have worn a bit, as one might imagine they would.
