I was about to give up hoping that the chaps at Meriden Motorcycles could unscrew the fork seal holders from the lower fork legs when he phone rang, it was Jon from said company to say that after about three hours of struggling, they had manage to split them and kept the parts in reusable condition - result! My question: when I reassemble what do you chaps recommend using (if anything) on the threads to (hopefully) make dismantling easier for future owners (I'm hoping not to need to do this again myself!).

Stainless rings with 'Cop…
Stainless rings with 'Copaslip' are, as John suggests, the answer here. They only need to be hand tight as with either long or short gaiters in place, they don't undo themselves.
Give them half a turn back and forth every so often.
Annual fork oil changes will help keep condensation corrosion to the internals to a minimum as well.

Stainless steel seal holders and copper grease will stop the galvanic corrosion that welded them on there. RGM do the seal holders in stainless.
