Hello all my first post! LE93 Classic Rotary
Just bought a low mileage classic. Went through Richard N's workshop a few years back but not used much since. Ive put 200 miles on it yesterday but there is a death rattle about 4,000 rpm and when coming to a halt
Im investigating and found what looks like an EMPTY drain plug hole in the primary case....not mentioned in ant of the books I have as a drain hole
Should there be a plug here..I assume so and my death rattle I guess is the primary caes devoid of oil
Any comments please?? BUGGER !!

Yes I see the drain and fill…
Yes I see the drain and fill hole as shown in the book BUT what is this hole??
a stick poked in goes in an inch and there is evidence of oil in the tread

It's a mounting for optional…
It's a mounting for optional engine bars or fairing bracket on the Interpol 2.

oh right that explains it …
oh right that explains it . Just seemed odd.
In a way good but in another way bad ...my bike still has a "death rattle" and no idea what is wrong...sounds sort of like primary chain as on overrun and when throttle "static" at about 4,000 rpm
Thought it might be no oil in primary and missing drain plug.
I will investigate the primary drive though. ANY ideas welcome

yea I also thought that was a plug hole missing the plug . My drain screw is painted red, to locate it, was that factory ?

If its the same as a…
If its the same as a Commander, it may be that the hydraulic primary chain tensioner is partially jammed. Not difficult to check with the outer primary chaincase removed.

Primary case query ?
Ok so I'm no nearer tracing my death rattle.
BACKGROUND. Engine was rebuilt by Richard Negus in 2013 to moly ..I have notes-nothing was spared. It had only done 3,900 miles. I bought it a month ago and it now has 4,400 miles with 200 by me in last week.
- Drained rear chain case (VERY gloopy) Filled with a pint of 20-50 to "wash" the inside Ran motor span rear wheel in gear. Drained case ...then refilled with 75cc as book. Adjusted rear chain (just 2 flats)
- Drained gearbox oil. Looked Ok ..refilled with new Silkolene Medium gear oil.
- Now got primary case off (what a bastard to remove!-Interesting double thread in small round cover to aid removal)
- Everything inside looks perfect with no chin rub anywhere
- Chain tensioner seems weak spring wise but moves OK with no wear on rubber
Owners manual warns against dismantling without workshop manual-I only have the Owners manual and the Police Interpol operators manual so Im at a loss here
RN notes talk about priming the tensioner...how is this done??
I can remove the tensioner and strip it ....I attach the drawing from Andover Norton...is the lower tensioner layout right??...it is different from the upper
I'm rather pissed off not to find anything !
Anybody near Rugby welcome to come have a look offer advice and have a poke around my collection and have a coffee
I'm riding in Banbury Run Sunday on my 1928 Scott..number 179. Come say hello !!

Gearbox oil
Arthur,
The medium Silkolene gear oil suits gearboxes requiring a 20-50 oil.
I would be very wary. You are running a machine which needs care, and which Norton Motors specified EP 90-140 for the gearbox.
Hard to find, but you are best with EP140, which is available. Like treacle, and keeps things in good order. And quiet.
It is not uncommon for rear chains to last 50 to 100 thousand miles. Easy to have them too tight. Again, EP 90-140 for the rear chain which runs enclosed in an oil bath.
Is this not all in your riders manual?

Rotary Death Rattle
THANKS
The oil I drained was reasonably thin. RN did work on the engine with full strip , but does not seem to have touched the gearbox although I assume he will have changed the oil. I doubt it has been changed sine 2013 and a little emulsion was evident under the oil pump cover
I used the Silkolene as I read it somewhere BUT cannot find it now !
The manual does say 85W/140 API/GL4 so have ordered some as this is not hard to find and the Sinkolene I drain can be used in my oil can !

The primary chain tensioner…
The primary chain tensioner only needs priming if it has been removed and taken apart. When taking off for another reason, for example to remove the primary chain, best practice is to wire the tensioner closed so that it can't pop apart allowing the springs and pistons to fall out. If that happens it will need priming with oil before re-assembly. It seems like the tensioner is not the problem. If the rattle can be pin-pointed it will help. Have you tried running the bike with the primary cover off? This may show something that indicates where the problem lies if it is in the primary mechanism.
