Capacitor

Forums

I have a 1974 Commando do I need to use a capacitor at all? seems pointless if you have to use a battery to start the bike.

I have an Alton E start and Boyer (red box type) an no capacitor. There is also a cheap generic regulator rectifier unit in place of the standard rectifier and Zenna diode. In the past i had the old Boyer mk3 with the same charging set up.

The capacitor is for starting on a flat battery or with no battery. If you have a good battery then it is not required. Other manufacturers  back in the day used the same charging set up an coil and points set up but no capacitor.

A capacitor will get you home if your battery fails, even if you can't kick it to start a bump start will work. But they degrade over time and can fail giving you a current leakage.
