1935 Model 20 - oil pump/tank question

I am restoring a 1935 Model 20 and i have a question about the oil tank and the 3 connection from it?

The two on the right side are straight forward as one is the supply to the oil pump and the other is the return to the oil tank. My problem is that i have no idea where the connection on the left side of the tank, at the same level as those on the right side goes? Can anyone help me with info as to what this connection is and where does it go/come from?

Is there a valve that connects to the tank or just a coupling and pipe?

Almost anything could have been modified over eighty-odd years, so check everything...but if you're talking about the 1/4" union underneath on the right, this is simply the oil tank breather (or as Norton called it in their rather quaint way, the "Oil Tank Air Release Pipe'...there should be an internal pipe connected to it which runs up the inside above the oil level.

There is usually just a short straight pipe connected here with a wider section outlet / reinforcement (you can make it by soldering a 5/16" pipe over the 1/4" and flaring out the end slightly).

There are no valves on the Norton oil supply side. Simply pipes directly from oil tank to unions behind the timing chest. Routing is quite important as you run close to the gear selector clevises if you have a Doll's Head box

Thank you for your reply and the information you have provided, however, I am a little confused with some details... Detail 1) I am familiar with the right side oil supply and return pipes, the 1/4â coupling I have a problem with is on the left side and is on its own. Detail 2) this lone coupling does have an internal pipe running up the inside of the tank Detail 3) if this as you say is the oil tank breather, where will the pipe from it externally go to? Many thanks for your input so far, much appreciated

The answer to that is "about three inches straight downwards". This was a time when vehicles were expected to mark their territory !

Part No. 3315 - unchanged for several years, although this illustration shows a later tank shape.

Sorry for my confusing reference to 'right' and 'left'...I had an oil tank in my hand and was looking at it from the front and not thinking about the complete machine. I do of course mean the opposite side from the filler neck !
