MISSING BOLT - ROADHOLDER No 371

I found John Oldridge's (Yorkshire Branch) tip about the missing centre stand pivot bolt on featherbed Nortons (Roadholder 371 November) extremely useful.

I looked at my '65 650ss -all ok. My '60 ES2 - not there. My '53 Inter not there.

It is easy to rectify the timing side on the ES2 because access is easy so I installed a 5/16" dia x 2 1/4" long bolt (M8 x55mm is an OK equal) with washers and locknut, the already existing hole in the engine plate lining up beautifully.

The drive side is not so easy,requiring the removal of the inner primary chain case so I've left that for the moment. You could perhaps execute it with the head of the bolt on the inner side of the left hand engine plate but you would have to be extremely adept with fingers trying to get the nut started and then tightened.

My Inter is a completely different kettle of fish insofar that the engine pates are dural and have never had the necessary holes drilled in them allowing bolts to be pushed through. I guess that is a provenance question so I'm sort of aligned/resigned to leaving it as I have had no trouble so far.

Many thanks for your kind response to my observation. I would only guess, as you suggest, that as the drive side bolt requires the removal of the inner chain case to fit, and if people forget to re- fit this bolt it is too much hassle to remove it to fit a small bolt.

I only assume that it will help with the rigidity of the engine, but stand to be corrected.
