Full width hub spoke size

My 60 99 had butted spokes orriginally.

Nope, but I did find out that the suppliers knew little about the correct spoke pattern and that there is a range of nipple sizes as well . Tread carefully if orriginality is your thing. Its possible that Norton (pre 63} and AMC did things differently. Rims may not be drilled to NORTON pattern.

If it helps I have just stripped the wheels on my Navigator and the spokes front and rear are 10 gauge (0.128")

Interesting, were they the butted type?, is that an AMC bike ?. IE after 63.

I have a straigth and a butte one. The straight is (Imperial) Wire Gauge 9, 3.57mm and the butted is 10 and 8, 3.17 and 3.97mm.

Hi Dan - Here are front and back wheels from my 1956 Featherbed Model 99 which I believe are all original. Both wheels have single butted galvanized spokes measuring .160"/.130" - same spokes on both wheels. Central Wheel lists spoke gauges as .158 " for 8 ga. And .124" for 10 ga. Perhaps wire gauges are before galvanizing- if so than it would appear that single butted 8/10 ga on both wheels for this machine.

If the rims are from central You may find that they have been drilled to a pattern that is different to the orriginals .Thats what I found. So a photo of a Dommies wheel may just confuse you. You will probably have too look at a later Atlas or Commando wheel.

Hello , this front wheel in the crap photo is off a 1960 m50 the chap said it was an original wheel i don't really know. the spokes look the same type as Richards. the nipples were made from what look like bronze. cant give any sizes though.

Timing (right ) side. Spokes trailing rotationally exit hub on outside.

spokes leading rotationally exit hub on inside.

Drive (left ) side. Spokes trailing rotationally exit hub from inside

Spokes leading rotationally exit hub from outside.

spokes staggered from right side to left by one hole.

Hi Dan, please let us know how you get on, I am particularly interested in whether the spoking pattern the new rim drilling dictates is different to that shown in Richards images, I hate an unfinished puzzle!!.

In the past when there were more sidecar outfits around, the wheels were modified to take thick spokes going to 6g or even 3/16th spokes. In the days of double adult chairs when the whole family and the kitchen sink was piled into it.

For what its worth, my 1961 99SS, still on the original wheels (but chrome showing its age), has 8/10 gauge butted spokes front and rear and 0.25" nipples.

Thanks for the heads up about JEK in Chard Dan, I've lived locally for 18 years and never heard of them!   I will swing past on the Navigator and check them out - could be very handy!
