Dommi 99 going bad

Forums

I have a 1961 Dommi 99. I took the bike out yesterday, after about 5 miles there was a bit of a miss. I turned for home and it got worse -felt like going on and off a cylinder. I took off the carb but no dirt and petrol flowing ok. Removed both plugs they were well sooted up.

Cleaned and replaced but same thing happened on a short test run. It starts but is now off the left cylinder, the petrol flows right out of head at exhaust, the left pipe is also well sooted up and actually blew the baffle out. The carb was replaced (new) seven years ago, all jets are clear. Previous owner fitted a capicator at the coil and not at points. Bike was goiung well prior to the outing. Any ideas?

Also would a Boyer ignition be of help? Bike is still 6V.

Thanks

Robert

Hello Rob well it's running too rich, Is your carburettor a monobloc and have you a filter fitted? - and what size is your main jet? It should be a 250 main jet 25 pilot 3 cutway slide 106 needle in 3rd notchpositionand the size of your carburetter is 376/67, 1.1/16inch also remove the condenser from the coil and fit in the distributor and check that you have a big blue spark at the plugs, if your spark that the plugs as a red spark or yellow-ish then the fault is in the electrics like coil, condenser, points or spark-plugs or the spark-plug caps also check for bad earth wires, also try the left hand plug in the right hand side and the right hand plug in the left hand side and see what happens Its a question of elimination , yours Anna J Dixon

Thanks Anna, The carb is right I have no filter I will need to check the jets, The previous owner couldnt get a condenser small enough for the dist, and was told fitting it elsewhere would do??. The bike was going fine until this problem as stated. I just got the bike back as I sold it 7 yrs ago and it went OK until now. I suspect the electrics is at fault, the spark plug cables are quite old the spark is weak. Would a Boyer help?.

Hello Robert,

Sounds as if you may have dirt under the needle valve, giving wrong float level, a common cause of very rich mixture. Also check the choke (air lever) is operating slide OK.

Regards Ron.

I once had this with an 88. I found the distributor base plate screws had come loose causing a misfire due to a bad earth there.

Unburnt fuel could falsely suggest an over fueling issue.

Just a thought.

Good luck.

Bike starts ok, I am thinking that due to a small cone shape of the baffel was blown out of exhaust could there be a blockage stopping the gasses from getting out would this cause this type of problem. Re choke I will take off the bell housing and see if choke is sticking. I will check the dist as soon as. Re exhaust would this mean there is rot and need to change the silencers they are about 7 yrs old but with few miles on them.

"the spark plug cables are quite old the spark is weak."? See my earlier letter - I take it you HAVE replced the cables? Leads will lose almost ALL of the HT if they have failed and they are the cheapest part of the ignition system to replace, so you would be wasting time and money if you didn't replace them straight away. PVC/copper-cored leads are heat sensitive so they need replacing quite frequently.

Problem sorted, I got new plugs, leads with new fittings. Replaced the exhausts the left exhaust had fallen apart inside.

Now no problem. Thanks for all the help.
