After 1970 the Fastback rear mudguard forward mount is a drop down plate from two holes in the crossplate at the back of the spine tube. Both my original (bent) frame and the new one do not have these holes. All parts lists that I have show the plate fitting but do not show the previous frame. Does anybody out there have an early fastback that they can photo and post? There are two small holes on a tab under the rear of the battery tray that I've used up to now, but I thought they were for the horn mount. I thought after 37 years I should fit it properly.
Thanks in anticipation

Thanks for that Paul, I'm familiar with the fitting for the 71 onwards frame as you describe. The 1970 and earlier frame does not have the two holes in the transverse frame plate. I think the forward end of the mudguard is supported by a strap that fits between the top suspension mounts.
Whilst many Fastbacks have been created by bastardising other types, there seems to be few original early ones around. Somebody must have one. ie. the one with the centre stand on the frame cross member and the side stand bolted to a square plate on the bottom frame rail.

Dave,
My '72 roadster has just been reassembled at the back end for a similar issue - I don't have the photo or parts book you are after - but having been looking at that area for most of this week I may have some ideas.
The top mounting is via two holes in the frame plate under the main spline, these connect via two bolts and nuts to the mudguard bracket, which has one hole at the bottom to connect the actual mudguard.
The bottom connection is via the two holes in the tab at the bottom of the battery box (as you describe above) - these have bolts from the rear and nuts looking at you from the back of the bike and align with the two slotted holes in the mud guard.
The horn mounts much further north and behind the battery.
Reagards - Paul.
