gear markings for laydown upright gearboxes

OK a can of worms here..

I see that norton gears that are marked with nxxxx. some have 3 after them. I guess this the pressure angle? So shouldn't be mixed with those not marked with 3?

I see the laydown gearbox sleeve gear is marked as GT172-3 (24T) so should the layshaft 4th have N8035 -3 ? (18T)

Going on from that, the AMC 4th layshaft gear sometimes has a 5 on or a 6. Why?

I need to know! :-)

Excuse my ignorance but what is a pressure angle?  Always good to earn something new.

I always assumed these random numbers were hobber or supplier related.

Interested, I'm still in lock down mode....

Involute gears are described in Wikipedia.  The contact points can be connected with a circle, and the angle between the circle and contact face can vary according to how far apart the gears are moved. Most Norton gear pairs have teeth numbers adding up to 42.  But not all.  The pressure angle is one detail that can change. It alters the load on the shafts.
