What is this spanner/wrench for?

Forums

This was recently sold on ebay, the open end is 1" Whitworth I believe. Is this for the fork head race adjuster nut?

My 99 cycle parts are with the painter, the rest is in pieces and I can't check if this would fit that nut or not. Would I need one of these to adjust that nut?

thanks!

That spanner is for the top stem adjust nut which is something like 35.7mm. I use an ordinary 36mm spanner myself.

I found one of those spanners at a Kempton Park autojumble a few years back, and i think it cost me about £5. It fits the rocker box covers on my Unified Twin perfectly. Niice to know it will also fit the steering head nut.

Hi Bruce,

This spanner I believe, was in the Norton toolkit of bikes fitted with long Roadholder forks. The ring end fits the stanchion top nuts which are the sameas the shortRoadholder ones. The open end fits the headstock adjusting nut ( under the top yoke ) and is much larger than the short Roadholder version. Regards Richard.

Spot on Anna... But question to all: Why do peoplemeasure the flats and thespannerswithmetricgauges when it is clearly from a vintagebritish motorcycle, which wouldhaveimperial dimensionedfixings?
In some cases there are similarities but not equivelantsto theoriginal dimensions. frown
