What is the recess for? petrol tank underside

Forums

I posted in "Classified" a Norton Wideline petrol tank from unknow origine except that it was sold along with a Dommie engine, an AMC gearbox and a Wideline Featherbed.

This tank diiffered from others with a recess on its underside. In my memory of Dommies, tanks underside are flat.

To find out what was the recess doing there, I called my local Norton neighbours to check their tanks on twin and single engines, Model 50 and Inter.

One Inter owner told me that this recess was also found on bikes with twins. But he added that the "cammy" tanks would be recognizable by a wider filler hole..

So was this recess designed to ventialte the cylinderhead or accommodate a tea pot, drive and keep your tea at temperature?

Looking for the opinion of experts.

Thanks

Most likely not a Dominator tank. Got a picture?
