Weak KS spring early AMC box

Despite having a roller layshaft bearing and a new spring my kickstart persists in swinging back on acceleration . I don't have a lot of confidence in new and probably pattern parts so am thinking of drilling the KS shaft and fitting a fabricated post to the inner cover to take the later spring design. Anyone see any problem with this?, Don't know why the KS won't stay put, never had this problem before.Bent shaft or worn bush seem the most likely culprits but were not found.

I believe (i could be wrong) the later spring is longer and the outer cover bush was altered in order to make space for it.

It would be far easier to get a spring from Andover Norton or a trusted source to insure a quality replacement. If like a great many of Norton's your bike spends less time on the road than back in the day (i include myself in this) an so does less miles than you would hope at least the spring would last better.

Also as far as I'm aware you could replace the inner cover outer cover and Kickstarter shaft with the later type as they are interchangeable but all three must be replaced together which will not be cheap unless you are lucky enough to find some cheap useable secondhand (i did say lucky).

Recently bought spares from trusted source and found them to be of dubious quality , everything is now contracted out and as machines are not built from these parts it can take years for any issues to be put right (if ever) . If at all possible I like to use orriginal parts which can be trusted to be the right material and tollerances. Best place for used parts ,probably Bike jumbles,E BAy mostly scrap stuff now.
