hello,
es2 engine 1955. should the main timing cover have a gasket .i have made engine gaskets before. if i were to fit one. then i was wondering if i need to shim the timing cogs. and use a rubber type oil seal on the pump, and not the fibre washer . just thinking of the gasket making clearances changes between the timing cogs and the oil pump to cover. i have used sealer on the cover before and the oil just slowly drips out over time.i have straightened the cover mateing surfaces ect.
thanks
barry.

I would not think that…
I would not think that shimming the timing gears is necessary.
Considering engine very cold to very hot, the axial clearances of the cams will be all over the place.
I would try to find a nice thin gasket material, pull the timing case up evenly, and not worry about it.
