I don't know of a hydraulic tensioner but you could look up RMA Engineering in the Services directory to see an alternative.

Has anybody ever modified the one from the Rotary?

The hydraulic tensioner is needed if the chain wears so as to take the wear up, I have gone for a wear free chain. Speak to Andy the Chainman and he can sell you a merc chain that is pre worn and high enough quality so there is no more wear in use so the static tensioner is sufficent. The RMA tensioner is not properly supported by the seller as when told of problems in service (which sound to be few in number it must be said) does not want to know.

The chain on the standard one lasts for years and years and rarely needs adjustment. Is there any advantage to a hydraulic tensioner?

There is no timing chain on a Rotary Chris, I guess you are thinking about the primary chain [oops! I was - Chris]. Jim Comstock In the States has developed a hydraulic chain tensioner and there is another one that is available that gets mixed reviews. I don't think that the cost is justifiable. Now hydraulic clutches, there's a thing.

The original post was about timing chains not primary chains

Jim Comstocks chain tensioner is a timing chain item. He may supply them through Colorado Norton Works.
