Thorspark electronic ignition conversion

Forums

I would be gratefull for any feeedback regarding the above electronic ignition conversion.

Wondered if anyone has fitted one & how it performes. Also is it as easy as the iinformation with it says it is to fit ?

Have now bought & fitted a Thourspark electronic ignition using the origonal K2F mag.

Working fine & have kept everything looking as if it is standard.

Took a bit longer to fit than the two hours suggested in the instructions, but did adapt the screw on end cover so as everything can be put back as standard if wanted.

Very happy with it so far.

Thomas, if you search for Thorspark on this site, you will find several posts on this subject (however, since they are available, I will not repeat them here).

I have just read some of the posts.

Pro's & con's for a quick & easy electronic solution or a mag. overhaul.

I do'nt use my bike much due to an injury, but have just had it out for a test & all seems well. Starts first kick with a lovely tick over.

The good thing is with care everything from standard can be kept so it could be put backif wanted.

At a quick glance it looks to be standard anyway.

Tom, I do not understand the rreason for your post. Are you now saying you have already fitted a Thorspark unit? If so, it is a bit late to ask for opinions. However, I fitted Thorspark, over three years ago, and have had no problems, or had to make any adjustments, since then. The only drawback being the need to keep the battery charged. However, if I had been living in the UK, or had a spare bike to ride, I would probably have sent the mag to Brightspark for overhaul. The Thorspark arrived, in Spain, .in less than a week, and, took less than a day to fit and time

On June 17th he asked for an opinion on the unit,

On July 6th he is telling us he has bought one and his opinion of it.

Hmm, did not notice date of first post. Apparently the unit was bought, and fitted, before any feedback was posted. In this instance Tom has "got away with it" , an excellent bit of kit without lo the original appearance.

I asked for any opinions & feedback, but got none !!!

Looked at other owners club sites, & got several replies, which promted me to go ahead with the conversion.

Very happy with it up till now.

Hi Tom, Thorspark has been mentioned several times on this site. When I first asked for information,, I got no replies either. Like you, I fitted anyway, and have no regrets.

Do you need to fit a pair of 6 volt coils and if so where and how please? My two for my RITA were lashed on inside the top frame rails with hose clips but there must be a better way on a Dommie ( slimline).I'll be crawling around on hands and knees at Brooklands tomorrow looking for ideas.David

David,

The kit comes supplied with a duel outputcoil. (12V in this instance for my 650SS)

I mounted it in the tool tray under the seat along with the sealed electronics. It comes with all mountings required.

Iclipped the original HT leads up under the tank so it looks asif the bike is still running from the mag.

David, the kit comes complete with coils either 6, or 12 volt as required. On my '54 Dominator, the coils sit in the tool tray, and the on/off switch is where the mag cut out used to be ( it might be a good idea to have a slightly fast tickover, so you don't forget to switch off when you stop!).

As mentioned in previous posts, I am more than happy with Thorspark, but might not have fitted it had I been in the UK (at least, not before getting a quote from Brightspark, for a mag overhaul).

Sorry for jumping in but all my recent posts regarding theThorspark seem to have vanished due to the very recent attack by the web-gremlins.

The Thorspark for my 1960 Dommi 99 arriveon Saturday after a slight delay asSussex M/c's didn't have the right one on the shelf. I was already busy with somegeneral household DIY on Saturday so I didn't get to start the taskuntil yesterday and finally finished the wiring uptoday.

From start to finish I guess it took around 6 hours due to unexpected visitors and neighbours popping round for a chat, etc. As I had already removed the cam ringand modified the screw on end cap all I had to do was drill the tool tray to mount the coil and switch and then cut a slot to run the HT cables out to the plugs.

Now that it's all installed and connected I was chuffed to seea niceblue spark at each plug when I kicked the engine over.

AllI need to do is sort out the timing (so long as my strobe works) and no doubt re-setthe carb but that's for tomorrow.

Regards to all

I purchased a Thorspark a while back, for my 99, and today set about removing the cam ring from my K2F magneto. However this does not appear to be an easy slide fit as literature would suggest. Any suggestions on how to persuade it? I have all been in contact by telephone with David Elder, anther N Ireland member, who wrote in last Roadholder edition looking for help to install his Thorspark. I have promised to help him when I install my own - not going well so far!

Kind regards

Hi Dan.

I also had what could be termed as a bit of struggle with the cam ring in myK2F. The cam ring of an auto-advance K2Fis supposed to be a fairly tight fit. If its a manual advance it will or should be free to rotate to provide the necessary advance and so should come out easily. Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs.

When you take the points plateouthave a close at the cam ringand you'll see two small holes, one near the bottom and the other near the top. The bottom one will beor should be plugged with a leather or felt plug to lubricatethe points. Also there is a small gap behind the cam ring.

I removed the leather/felt plug and managed to get two small Allen keys to fit in the holes in the cam ring and, I also made two smallhook ended levers to fit in the gap.

I started by applying a small dose of WD40 round the joint between the cam ring and the mag body and left it to soak while I had a coffee. Then I slotted the levers in the gap opposite each other and applied some gentle even pressure to both levers andit began to move.I helped it on its way with the Allen keys held inmole grips until it was far enough out to get hold of thecam ringwith some bent long nosed pliers. Using a mix of all three tools worked for me. Patience is the key.

Once its out have a close look at theface of the magneto case and remove any burrs that you might have put on it so it doesn't contact the back of the ignition unit. When you install the ignition unit do a quick continuity check between the mounting plate and the magneto case with a multi-meter to make sure you haven't got a short between the two. If you have any high points they can be easily removed with some medium grit emery stuck to a piece of dowel (or similar). Just make sure to give it a good clean out before you put the ignition unit back in.

Like I've said be patient

If you have any problems feel free to drop me and email (jonsun00@googlemail.com)

Best of luck

John

PS. For what it's worth, I sorted the timing and carb tuning today. Now she fires up starts first kick and runs nice and sweet.
