Tank painting?

I have started stripping the tank of my 1962 Norton Dominator. I thought it would be like doing my series so started the process early with the star Chem Synatrip. It was like washing cream out of bowl. Answers why it was a *&%^$ job. No such thing as patina in my world, just rot and general neglect.I would like to give the steel tank a dose of acid etch primer to keep her sealed from the elements and act as a good base. The question is can I use a high build primer or filler on top of acid etch, or is it just overkill and don't bother with acid etch. I want it to be a lasting job and I know the key is in the foundation of the job.The tank could do with a clean out inside and bagged for good measure. Have any of you had experience of this. Probably will get the liner from Frost's.Any thoughts?Kevin

Hello Well I use a good ZINC primer Like the one Frost restoration do or P182 Isopod most Etching primer is for Glass fiber resins tanks ETC has they form a bond too protect the Glass fiber from Cracking , But steel is a different process you need 4 good coats of Zinc Primer and them a base coat of What ever colour your doing the Tank 4 coats of this And then I use a Anti -Ethernol clear Lacquer in Aerosol cans that have a ring pull activator on the underside this make a very good high gloss shine . you also need a good area too do this and the Temperature Has too be above 70F and you need a fan extractor to take out the over spray and you need the proper Safety clothing and Mask for paint spaying See NU-Agane Paint.Co.uk they at bedford Or Phone 01234-355990 yours Anna J

Hi Kevin when I needed the inside of my tank cleaned I put pea gravel in the tank sealed all holes with Duck tape , then packed the tank into a cement mixer with blankets ,towels rags . Make sure it's packed realy well ! Then set the mixer away .it took a couple of hours but with great results. Ian

Yes great results a bent tank for one In did my tank with some old nuts out of my old nut and bolt draw and rattled them and round for a minute or two, then washed out with rust remover over night soak next after noon empty tank and dry out for a day or two or three !! when nice and dry over the electric oil heater then I used Harley Davidson Tank sealer 100% Ethernol prof it sets like rock some you need a screw bung were the tap fits so you can get your tap back in and put some grease around the threads too you need too do this bit before any painting , yours ANNA J
