Tank pad fixing

Previous old bikes I've owned have had a metal plate which fitted into the rubber knee pad. So when screwed onto the tank there were no gaps around the edge. I find it hard to believe that Norton only used a couple of screws and allowed it to waft in the breeze. Did they really use contact adhesive or silicon sealant? How do you fit yours?

If I fit new ones (which don't have the steel reinforcing imbedded in the rubber) I run a bead of RTV silicon sealer just inside the edge of the knee pad and then use the screws to set it in place correctly. To ensure the outside edges of the knee pad bond, I then use elastic straps to hold down the edges. I prefer a neutral cure RTV. One I did 10 years ago on a 1951 ES-2 is still perfectly in place.

Thanks for the information - the fact they used metal in the pads makes sense. These are obviously no longer available - will have another go and try the silicone.
