Swing(ing) arm shaft play

Rebuilding swing arm on my 1972 Manufacture Combat Roadster . The shaft has a minuscule amount of play where it passes through bearing tube in gearbox cradle . Is this normal and taken up by the retaining bolt or should it be replaced ? Of course I will be replacing bronze bushes in the swing arm itself - ( or swinging arm if you prefer )

Sounds like the tube the shaft runs in is wallowing, this is because the tube is not thick enough. The fix is to add 2 circular clamps on the OD of the tube.

Thanks John for the help . As I have all chassis components disassembled and stripped to bare metal in preparation for powder coating it seems that welding nuts to the tube at the ends is the way to go.

I did mine a few weeks ago, I knocked out the pin which had corroded in place. I was advised that the bushes are very hard wearing so cleaned them up and bought a new standard pin. It is a sliding fit with no play. You can get over size pins with all the problems that can bring.

I had the same problem, shaft moving in the cradle tube.

It is not necessary to weld anything, get two split collars, drill and tap a hole in each, then drill two holes in the cradle tube. Access is tricky but it can be done.

Fit the collars around the tube making sure the two bolts are lined up with the holes, tighten the clamp Alan screws, then tighten the two bolts. I couldn't get lock nuts on mine.

As the chassis is disassembled I've opted for nuts rather than collars - the nuts need to be welded to the tube in order for them to fulfill their purpose - to provide more thread to to take up the load of the screws as they bear against the shaft . I feel the wall thickness of the tube is insufficient to provide enough thread .
