Stuck in 4th!

Forums

Good morning.....

I was happily enjoying a run out on my 1959 99 recently back on the road after 16 years.

On mile 36 with everything working sweetly, a horse owner lost control of her stallion and ran out in front of me. I locked on but could well have pressed hard with my right foot as well as my left.....

The bike is now stuck in 4th. Shall I try gently tapping the gear lever or is it likely to be more serious?

Thanks in advance, John

Forcing the gear lever can never be good. Movement is transmitted from pedal to cam plate by a system of pawls and springs. If they have jammed' then force will simply damage them with no hope of moving the cam plate. Rocking the rear wheel back and forth with the bike on the stand whilst attempting to select may help.

Can you get a ring spanner on the cam plate or quadrant retaining bolt to see if they turn independently of the selector mechanism ?

Does the lever still have travel and a spring return ?

Can the rear wheel turn with clutch lever pulled in ?

I'd be surprised if there was a fault within the cluster but selector mechanism or primary drive may be malfunctioning.

A similar thing happened to me, A sudden stop and stall in top gear left it locked up. As you can't kickstart in gear I turned the bike round and bump started downhill after which all returned to normal. Mystifiying !!.

This has also happened to me. Stopped for petrol in Corby, couldn't change down. No amount of wiggling the gear lever made any difference. Had to push start in 4th (try it) then ride to Holyhead stuck in top. It can be done. Turned out that the pawl spring had broken. A simple fix when you have a spare pawl spring.

Thanks Richard, The bike did not stall and I managed to get the 3 miles remaining to home in 4th.

The lever still has 2" travel up and down and a spring return.

The rear wheel turns with the clutch in.

Looks like its cover off and hope something obvious has occurred!

As Richard said,if you have a small adjustable spanner its just possible to get onto the camplate securing bolt and put the bike in 2nd or third ,a bump start and you can get home.
