Replacement seat

Forums

Can anyone recommend a seat that will fit a rigid model 50 (1938)? I have tried a number and I need different springs or the front fitting is not correct. I assume it will be the same as a 16H or ES2 etc? Could you point me to one on a website that will fit?

Norton seats are a bit of a minefield, and complicated by the fact that the seats were lowered by 1 1/2" in 1937. The two 'ears'at the front of the seat for the pivot bolt have to be at the right angle, lenght& width for the seat to sit in the correct positionin the tank recess. Most makes of motorcycle used this principle, all with slightly different dimensions.

Unless you are lucky enough to to have an original Norton seat, the best way forward is to get a copy of the 1938 catalogue, a road test or period photo,to see where the seat 'sits'. Then get one of Armours (www.armoursltd.co.uk) British made Lycett replica seats with the bracket kit, (don't touch anything Indian)drill & fit the pivot bolt, position and mark it all up before welding the brackets on - or modify one of your existing seats if suitable. Original bracket fitment was usually with rivets, youmight want to do it that way.Rear springs are then easy, get a lenght that just lifts the rear a little, sothe saddleis horizontal when seated. Again Armours do springs, or you will find a big selection at the main autojumbles.

I did this recently with a 1938 restoration but used an original old Lycett frame, and got R.K.Leighton to make up a new cover - it all fits and works well.

Roger.
