Removal of crank shaft nut on ES2

Forums

Hi all, Hopefully this is a fairly simple question. I need to remove the nut from the crack shaft to replace the front sprocket but when turning the nut it turns the engine over so does anyone have a method of stopping the engine from turning over so you can undo the nut? I guess maybe put the chain back on and try and lock the chain in place somehow but I just wanted to check I am not missing any tricks before doing that.

The usual method was to put the bike in top gear ,hold the rear brake on and give the spanner a whack. Nowadays I use a rattle gun ,if the motor is not connected then you could try filling the chamber with rope through the plug hole ,or take off the head, barrel and piston ,put a bar through the small end and lock the motor against some battens.on the crank case.Check first its a standard right hand thread.

Thanks for that. Sounds good. I was kind of thinking along the lines of the rear brake but don't have a primary chain that fits at the moment so hoping there was something else. I don't know if I fancy going into the motor for this as it's in the bike so I will wait until I get my primary chain.

The rope trick works well. But make sure that the valves are closed when you feed the rope in or a bent valve might result.
