Rear stand, rigid frame

Forums

When raised, the rear stand on my '37 CS1 engages in a clip that hangs down from the removeable tail section of the rear mudguard. The stand has a strong spring and comes up with some authority. Over time this has caused cracking around the mounting hole in the tail section where it attaches to the right hand stay. If I remove the clip the stand raises to horizontal, where it is stopped by lugs on the stand which butt against the frame near to the pivot. At this point the stand cross bar sits neatly between the rear tyre and the mudguard tail section, no interference with either.

My question: Is the stand clip essential? Worst case scenario seems to be a failure of the stand spring, in which case the stand would drop and trail along the road. I don't think it would dig in and cause a disaster. If the clip is considered essential I guess I will have to reinforce the tail section of the guard around the mounting holes which need a repair anyway. Your thoughts appreciated.

As far as the parts books are concerned, I can see no mention of retaining clips on the post-vintage Nortons and the catalogue illustrations don't show them either.

If yours is coming up high enough to clip on to the tail section then it might be that the stand stops (on stand or frame) are worn and could do with building up.

I'm sure you guys will correct me if I am wrong, but if you do not use the spring clip, every time you go over a bump the stand will bang up and down.

Richard, comparing my bike with your (excellent) brochure picture my stand may come up just a little higher but the clip hangs down some way below the guard so the clip becomes the new stop. Ideally the clip should be positioned so that it catches the stand at the fully raised position, avoiding the stress on the guard. However that would put the catch behind the guard and so be inaccessible.

Mike's comment about the stand banging up & down over bumps is probably correct, although there is a fair amount of spring tension holding it up.

I will try without the clip before deciding whether just to repair, or repair and reinforce the tail section of the guard. You have probably noticed that the clip is also damaged but I have a repro item from the guys in Poland (name escapes me for now).

Many thanks

An original type stand spring in good condition is a fearsome thing as anyone who has ever had to fit one will know.

I'm not aware of my 16H stand banging up and down. Of course, it doesn't travel as fast as a CS1 but I rode it up and down the cobbled hill that leads to Cassel yesterday and although the fork bump stops were working hard and I was out of the saddle more than in it, I didn't hear any stand clanking.

Would it be Jiri at Vintage Replica. that you bought the clip from ?

Under those circumstances I doubt that the CS1 would be travelling any quicker than your 16H!

Yes, the clip came from Vintage Replica (who are of course in the Czech Republic and not Poland as I stated yesterday).

Cheers, Ian McD
