Re: At long last!

Forums

[Sorry if this is a double post, but my internet dropped out while I was trying to post the original!]

After a couple of false starts (and a couple of thousand pounds!), finally seem to have a sorted bike . Photo is at Burwick, as far south as you can get on Orkney, and then I rode to Birsay, as far north as you can get. All told, 100 miles today and 55.6mpg. I'm a happy bunny. Time to get my entry in for the Orkney Vintage Club summer show.

Makes my one look rather shabby. You will have to venture south to that other island of Great Britain to get some proper miles in!

:D I do have a bit of a plan formulating, but there might not be enough time for me to finalise it!

Nice looking bike!

Thanks, Dan. It's running well too - (fingers crossed, pretend I didn't say that!) :D

Which make of carrier is it, Kevin? And did it need fettling?

George

Hi George

It's a Craven Carrier. It was on when I bought the bike and I thought I would take it off as it is a bit 'old man' - then I realised I AM an old man and it's damn useful! :D

I haven't worked out how to attach more than one photo to a post, so I've made a PDF with photos in. It doesn't seem as if any great amount of fettling was required, other than spacers.

Nice machine, is this the most Northerly Norton in the British Isles?

As for 55.6 Mpg, I regularly used to get 55 mpg from my BMW K75,740cc which I suppose wasn't bad!

Are the roads all twists and turns?

Hi John.

Thank you. Strictly speaking, I know of one, under restoration, 650SS which is about half a mile further north than me! :D

I'm anticipating a slight improvement in the consumption as the engine beds in after relining the bores, new mains and new valves.

Without exaggerating, the roads here are a fabulous mix of long straights, some gentle and some tight bends. Traffic is a joke - i.e. none to speak of, and the lack of trees gives perfect sight lines across bends. Now, if only we had more sunny days! ;)

Hi Anna,

Wow, that's bright! :)

The rear tyre is a 4.10x19 as per the attached photo. It was first registered on 23 April 1965 (hence it is called George :D ) to a chap in London. It has been up and down the country, ending up here in the far north. As far as I know it has never been out of the UK.

Happy riding!

Kevin
